Linux Routers Performance Report

Background

In early 2001, our Center embarked on a project to incorporate intrusion detection into Linux based routers. Some preliminary experiments were performed to assess the capabilities of various equipment used to simulate a small portion of the Internet. The equipment being assessed include various network adapters, network switches and IA-32 processor based computers. Some of the experiments were directed towards assessing the overhead of performing some intrusion detection functions currently being studied by members of the Center.
